PROGRAM OVERVIEW

THE MISSION OF THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
STL Referee Scholarships was established with these continuing goals and objectives to:

  • Recognize and encourage studious ability and skilled academic performance among eligible MIHOA members.

  • Encourage personal growth through participation in extracurricular activities within the civic and academic community.

  • Recognize intellectual growth and achievement.

  • Provide fiscal support that eases financial burden while encouraging the achievement of post-secondary education in college or vocational school programs. (Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice.)

 

FUNDING
A board comprised of current and past MIHOA and USA Hockey members and other members of the St. Louis amateur hockey community is the administrating body for this scholarship program. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, gender, disability or national origin.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants to the BMMSF must be:

  • Officials age 24 and under who are active members of MIHOA with a minimum of two years membership as of the application deadline.

  • High School seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in a full-time* undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four- year college or university or vocational-technical school.

    • *Full-time study is defined as full-time enrollment for the entire upcoming academic year.

 

Past recipients of this award are eligible to reapply to the program if a minimum GPA of 2.5 is maintained.

 

AWARDS
If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award that will be determined by the STL Referee Scholarships board. Criteria will include, but not limited to, the number of eligible applicants, participation within MIHOA as well as extracurricular activities within the civic and academic communities as well as the total funds available to distribute for that year. Awards are for undergraduate study only.

 

APPLICATION
Interested students must complete the application no later than May 31 of the current application year. In-line transcripts and grade reports are not acceptable. Applicants will receive acknowledgment of receipt of their application. If an acknowledgment in not received within three weeks, applicants may call STL Referee Scholarships to verify that the application has been received.

Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information. Applications are evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, answer all questions as completely as possible. Incomplete applications may not be evaluated. All information received is considered confidential and is reviewed only by the STL Referee Scholarships board. 

 

SELECTION OF RECIPIENTS
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school, games officiated where the applicant is a member, and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and two letters of recommendations.

The STL Referee Scholarships board makes the selection of recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision of the BMMSF board as final.

Applicants will be notified in early July as to their selection status. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Applicants not receiving an award may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

 

PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIPS
The STL Referee Scholarships board processes the payments. Payments are made in July of the year of scholarship approval. Checks are mailed to each recipient’s school and are made payable to that school for the student.

 

OBLIGATIONS
Recipients have no obligation to MIHOA. They are, however, required to supply the STL Referee Scholarships board with complete transcripts when requested and to notify the STL Referee Scholarships board of any changes of address, school enrollment, or other relevant information.

 

REVISIONS
MIHOA reserves the right to review the conditions and procedures of this scholarship program and to recommend changes at any time. It also reserves the right to terminate its endorsement of the program.
